.areas affected. this local statement provides important information and recommended actions for people and marine interests in select locations and coastal water legs of south Florida.

.watches/warnings. A tropical storm warning is now in effect for the following locations, coastal broward.

A tropical storm warning continues for the following locations. Coastal collier, mainland monroe, coastal miami dade and far south miami dade.

A tropical storm wind warning is now in effect for the following locations, inland broward, metro broward. A tropical storm wind warning continues for the following locations, inland collier, inland miami dade and metro miami dade.

For marine interests, a tropical storm warning is in effect for the atlantic waters of broward and miami dade counties out 60 nautical miles including biscayne bay as well as the coastal waters of collier and mainland monroe counties. A tropical storm watch continues for the following locations.

Coastal palm beach. A tropical storm wind watch continues for the following locations, glades, hendry, inland palm beach and metro palm beach.

For marine interests, a tropical storm watch is in effect for portions the waters of palm beach county as well as lake okeechobee. A flood watch is in effect for all of south Florida.

.storm information. At 5 am edt, the center of tropical storm bonnie was located near latitude 24.1n, longitude 78.6w.

This was about 155 miles southeast of miami fl, or about 240 miles east-southeast of naples fl. Storm motion was wnw at 18 mph.

The center of tropical storm bonnie is on track to move across the Florida straits and pass over the Florida Keys and very close to the southern tip of the Florida peninsula today. Regardless of the exact track of the center of bonnie, impacts from the storm will be felt over the south Florida mainland.

The most significant impacts are expected over broward, miami-dade and collier counties as well as mainland monroe county, with lesser impacts in the palm beaches and lake okeechobee region. The main area of showers and squalls is forecast to arrive at the southeast coast around 10 am, moving rapidly west across the peninsula during the afternoon and evening.

It is important to remember that tropical storm force winds can be dangerous. As a result, outdoor activities should be limited today.

Rainfall amounts area wide through tonight are forecast to be 2 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts of up to 5 inches. This is capable of causing flooding mainly in flood prone areas such as coastal locations which are vulnerable to tidal effects.

There is also the possibility of isolated tornadoes across all of south Florida today and tonight. .precautionary/preparedness actions.

The chance for tropical storm conditions at this time ranges from 35 to 55 percent over miami-dade and collier counties, and between 25 to 35 percent in broward county. This represents a general steady to slightly downward trend since the last forecast.

, winds. As tropical storm bonnie approaches, sustained tropical storm force winds are expected to begin late this morning or midday over miami-dade and broward counties, and this afternoon over collier county.

Maximum winds are forecast to be in the 30 to 40 mph range with gusts to 55 mph. These winds represent a limited threat to life and property.

Minor to moderate damage may occur to older mobile homes, especially those that are unanchored. A few houses may have minor damage to roof shingles and siding.

These winds are capable of damaging carports, awnings, pool cages and lanai screens. Unsecured lightweight items will be blown around, possibly causing additional damage.

Winds will become dangerous on bridges and causeways, especially for high profile vehicles. Some electrical wires will be blown down, and isolated to scattered power outages are likely, especially in areas with above ground lines.

Most newly planted trees and shrubs will be damaged or uprooted. Small branches and numerous small twigs will break off trees.

Many palm fronds will be blown down.
